About the presenter
Dr Serahni Symington works in the field of family counselling and child and adolescent interventions through counselling and play therapy. She holds a PhD in Psychology with a research focus on the adolescent socialisation patterns and impacts of new technological developments (internet, media, social media). She is a part time Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Cornerstone Institute. Further she has a private practice in Durbanville, where she mostly works within her communities’ schools and ECD centres to look at child development through the lens of healthy social interactions and strong familial relationships. She also sees private clients in the form of children ranging from 4-18 years old.

Aim
- To explore the concept of conscious parenting and classroom management with a focus on disciplinary measures
- Understand the current struggle with regards to discipline in a young generation of children and young parents
- Understanding discipline from a child’s perspective and physical developmental brain states
What will be covered?
Basic theory
Basic theory of conscious discipline
Brain states model
Exploring the brain states model of emotional regulation in children
Practical discipline examples
Practical discipline examples that stimulate healthy emotional growth and builds relationship with parents and/or educators
Outcomes
1.
A better understanding of the conscious discipline framework
2.
Having tools to practically implement at home or in classroom (or in facilitation with parents in a supporting role).
