ABOUT STUDENT

My name is Winkie. My personal motto is “change the community in order to be able to change the world”. I’m very passionate about community development, and I work as a Funda leader under the Nalibali youth-reading campaign in my home of Khayelitsha. I am a single parent with two lovely children – in my free time I enjoy studying for my community development courses and playing netball.

My degree programme here will expand my knowledge on community development and make me into a more effective and efficient leader. It’s already taught me a lot about how to project strength and confidence as a positive role model in my community.

Studying gives me a great feeling of self-worth. I am proud to better understand who I am, and the perspective I’ve gained here helps me be a better support to the people I encounter. My degree programme for me is not just a path to a job, but also a process of learning skills that I can apply every day in my community. I hope to use what I’ve learned in leading workshops on basic counselling skills in Khayelitsha.
