In celebration of Mandela Day, the SRC (with the support of Cornerstone Institute) will be making a contribution to a community project in Bishop Lavis that provides food to those impacted by poverty.
BLAC - Bishop Lavis Action Community
BLAC was formed on the 5 August 2017. BLAC is a true community based social justice movement. We believe that our community possesses a rich and untapped wealth of resources – the challenge lies in unlocking this wealth. And our successes thus far in terms of mobilizing our community comes from the belief that we must creatively tap this resource. Our model is simple, yet effective as it allows those with resources to contribute towards the wellbeing of the community by investing in BLAC. All our members are volunteers who give of their time and other resources freely. Our office space, a container is free. We pay no electricity or water. All our office equipment including computers, printers, stationery and office furniture were donated by community members. Renovations like petitioning of the container as well as proper electrification was done free of charge by skilled artisans in the community. Training venues are generally free except when we use the facilities on the Lavis Sportsground. Most of our members are over the age of fourty and bring loads of experience, are single mothers with strong character and have a burning desire to contribute towards community development and change.
